Over the last little while I’ve seen a number of people on social media asking where they should be submitting their short stories. As a writer of horror and sci-fi, I’m not really in a great position to make suggestions for, say, romance, comedy or drama. But, I can offer a few suggestions for those looking to submit science fiction, horror, and even fantasy.
So, without further ado, here is a list of magazines and websites I have submitted to. Some are quite large, prestigious, and have been around for decades. Others are very new, very small, or both. I think there is merit to submitting to all kinds of publishers.
- Uncanny Magazine
- Fantasy & Science Fiction
- Clarkesworld
- Asimov’s Science FIction
- Analog Science Fiction & Fact
- Silver Blade Magazine
- Strange Horizons
- Apex Magazine
- Escape Pod
- The Dread Machine
- DreamForge
- Augur
- Uncharted
- OnSpec
- Cosmic Roots and Eldritch Shores
- Hexagon
- Three-Lobed Burning Eye
- Bourbon Penn
- The Colored Lens
- Dusty Attic Publishing
- Androids and Dragons
- Duotrope
- Story Unlikely
- Alex Parker Publishing
I have a special affinity for the last entry, Alex Parker Publishing, as they were the first to take a chance on me and publish my short story “SSID.”
This is, of course, not meant to be an exhaustive list, and I am always searching for new places to submit. If you have any to add, please share them in the comments!
As my favorite quote about rejection goes:
You have to learn to take rejection not as an indication of personal failing but as a wrong address.

Good luck and happy submitting!
