My Writing Space

Welcome!

This week I thought I’d draw from the well of “blog topics for authors” lists found in Google, and write a topic I’ve been wanting to use:

“Share a picture of your writing space and talk about some unique or special things you have within that space.”

My office is still a work-in-progress of its own, but I love it all the same. For context, I’m trying to aim in the direction of a 1940s private detective of the supernatural. Or perhaps, “Timelord obsessed with 1940s Boston instead of 20th century England.”

With that in mind, from the door you’re greeted with all my nerdiness, in its full glory.

Take note of the LEGOs, models, and plethora of Star Wars, Star Trek, and other nerdy necessities (before you ask, the bat’leth is foam covered in duct tape and was for a friend’s bachelor party).

I read books, short stories submitted to Perseid Prophecies, and screenplays I’m studying from the couch, and plan out plotlines pacing in front of it.

To the right is my bookshelf. I built it myself, and it’s nowhere near large enough. I plan to eventually extend it in both directions, over the couch, and towards the doorway.

Unfinished as they may be, these shelves contain some of my favorite authors, from Douglas Addams to Stephen King, Bill Butcher, Becky Chambers, Carl Sagan, and more.

Across from my bookshelves and couch, is another small bookcase.

This is a “special” bookshelf, which contains books I consider special (even it that only means they look better in there). There are World War II atlases, books on the occult, on UFOs, and literal grimoires, as well as Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and Herman Melville. There is also a photo of my grandfather in his Army uniform circa 1945, and a few esoteric “relics” and “idols” (some from etsy, others 3D printed).

And on top, a pair of small aquariums, one 10 gallon, the other 1 gallon. There’s a betta in the 10 (named The King in Cobalt), and soon there will be shrimp in the other.

And finally, my desk.

Yup. That’s where the magic happens. On an old laptop struggling to run two extra monitors, on an old desk, under Fox Mulder’s UFO poster.

To the right of the desk, difficult to see in this photo, is an old record console. For now, it’s extra desk space beneath by outlining corkboard. Someday, (I hope) it will be a case for a new computer, adding to the retro-futuristic feel I want. But that may have to wait until after I’ve written a best seller or a blockbuster.

My office has been a few years in the making, and it will likely take many more before it is exactly as I want it, but it’s getting there. And more importantly, it always puts me in the right mindset to write.
